I try to keep my parenting style simple. I don’t freak out when Parker falls down – I’ve learned it causes her to freak out more. Parker has a set bedtime routine – and she’s pretty easy to get down to bed.
Then I made two mistakes. In the spirit of my Mommy Wars post from a few weeks ago, I’m going to be transparent… because I’m sure I’m not the only one with a toddler like this:
1. My toddler used a bottle until she was 2 years old.
2. My toddler ate baby food until she was 2 years old.
With both of these I would try to offer an alternative: milk in a silly cup or a small plate of whatever we were eating for dinner. When she wouldn’t eat it, I would cave and feed her baby food because I was not worried about her nutrition. After being around other kids her age, I realized that Parker was ‘behind’ in the food department and with her starting ‘school’ in August we needed to do something! So we went cold turkey. As terrible as it sounds, if she wouldn’t eat regular food then she didn’t eat. It didn’t last long. We are still working on different textures, but this baby will eat almost anything now and drinks her milk from a cup.
