Last June I completed in a relay triathlon with two ladies I worked with. Meaning I only did one leg of the race – the run. The energy at the event was electric and I was convinced to do one all on my own. That brings me to this weekend.
TriRock Clearwater 2013 Sprint Triathlon
500m swim, 13.4 mi bike, 3.1 mi run
I arrived early with my cheering squad – David, Tori and my mom. They wouldn’t let me carry anything. It was pretty cute! I was so glad to have them with me. This event had tattoos for numbers instead of using sharpie markers, which I thought was a neat touch!
I prepared for the swim, but was concerned about it being cold. The weather outside the water was about 69-70 degrees and the water temp was about 73 degrees. It almost felt like I was getting into the bath water, since the water was warmer than the air.
At the start, I really got butterflies! I couldn’t believe what I was about to do! Once I got swimming I let a few people pass me because I got a little paranoid someone would pull me under – an irrational fear, but never the less I was a little worried. I rotated between breast stroke and back stroke to not get too exhausted and it worked great!
As I came out of the water, I could hear them cheering for me! A great feeling!!
Next, biking. I wasn’t super worried about this until I had trouble climbing the bridges. I got about a third of the way up and decided that I could walk faster than I was peddling. So I walked to the top and road down! Next time I will do more hill training!
Last, the run. I got this – I could run 3.1 miles in my sleep at this point and my legs were numb from the bike.
Every time I finish a race I get emotional. The crowd cheering, the finish line ahead, realizing I have finished something that at one point or another I didn’t think I could.
