#ChicagoMarathon – 9 weeks to go update!

Hey!  It’s me – back to running and I could not be happier!  It has been slow going but I am back at it.  With three weeks down and only 9 more weeks to go till Chicago, I can say that I am earning about a “C” for keeping to the plan!  I am running slow to keep my injured calf from last year happy – but I am running nonetheless.

In order to get back to marathon ready, I created what I am calling a “Get it done plan”. This will help me build my mileage back up and give me the base that I need to cross the finish line!  Not in any record time, but a finishing win!

I have only reached 12% of my $1,000 fundraising goal.  When I signed up for this requirement, in the back of my mind I thought, “We raised over $8,000 for Rett last year, $1,000 is nothing!”

So here is how you can help me reach my goal.  I am asking for $25 sponsors for each mile of my marathon.  That’s 26 sponsors! A few slots are already taken, but you can reserve your spot today!  I will create a t-shirt with all of the names on it and run in it during my October Marathon in Chicago! If you would like to dedicate your mile to a family who has benefitted from RMHC, please feel free to add that note when you make your donation!

Why do I want to run Chicago? There are 6 world major marathons – 3 of which are located in the United States.  I would like to run all three of the US World Major Courses: Boston, Chicago and New York.  You all helped me run Boston last year in honor of Lauren for the Rett SYmdrome Association of Massachusetts.  Running Chicago this year will put me only one marathon away from this personal goal of running these three iconic races in my lifetime!

Why is RMHC so important? While I have not benefitted directly from RMHC, I am aware of about 4 Rett families (thanks to the wonders of Facebook) who use the RMHC facilities on a regular basis when they go to see specialist for their girls!  RMHC and Rett are linked and I know these Rett sisters of Lauren’s are forever grateful for their services.  If you have never been to a RMHC house I would encourage you to search for the one nearest you and get involved.  The house in Tampa is located near Tampa General on Davis Island.  I have had the privilege of helping a team serve dinner there twice in the last few months.  We were able to take a quick tour and hear a few stories of parents that were willing to share with us.  Families travel from all over the place for the services that Tampa General, as well as the Tampa Shriner’s Hospital, provide.  At my most recent visit, we met a family from Brazil.  They travel once a year for their daughter to receive treatments for an autoimmune disease at Shriners and are able to stay at the RMHC house in Tampa in order to stay close to their daughter.  The mother and father take turns coming back to the house for a good night sleep and a hot shower. RMHC is more than just a place to stay, it’s about keeping families together during difficult situations!
